Dear What She Wants subscribers:
Throughout its ten-year history, What She Wants has functioned as a volunteer collective. Producing a hewspaper is a huge endeavor, involving not just the actual editorial and production work that goes into each issue, but advertising, distribution, recruitment, subscriptions, fundraising, correspondence, and a myriad of ongoing tasks necessary to keep a feminist newspaper alive and growing.
For the past year and a half, we've been operating with a staff of only 3 collective members and a handful of other women who consistently give their time. As a result, almost all our energy has gone into producing each issue, with little time to spare for the ongoing work which insures our health and growth. In July we decided to suspend publication in the hope that, without the monthly pressure of deadlines, What She Wants could reorganize and revitalize.
Two months later, we still don't know the future of What She Wants. However, its longevity and the scores of newsletters and publications by other local groups show that women's media has strong roots in Cleveland. Many women already have come forward to discuss whether, and in what form, What She Wants will continue. These meetings are open. The next two are October 19 and October 25 at 7:30 in our office in the Civic (3130 Mayfield Rd. in Cleveland Heights). Call 321-3054 for further information.
Meanwhile, a group has taken over the "What's Happening" function of the newspaper in this calendar form. This monthly publication will be available free at many local events and distribution outlets. We'll also mail it to · out-of-town subscribers who request it for the duration of their subscriptions.
Our current funds will go to pay all outstanding bills and to keep our office open for the next few months. Where possible, we will also refund subscriptions. If you would like a refund, please send us an SASE. You'll be reimbursed on a pro-rated basis.
Our decision to suspend publication was a very difficult one. Our contact with readers, contributors, and feminist groups and publications across the country has been an invaluable learning experience, and the support we've received from advertisers and distributors very gratifying. We look back on our contribution to the last ten years of the women's movement with pride and look forward with optimism to the next.
In Sisterhood,
The What She Wants Collective: Mary Walsh
